bringing an israeli nonprofit to the american market

The Challenge

A grassroots Israeli organization approached Amplify to assist them in securing the support required to help fund their programmatic needs. With an unclear message and an unsophisticated approach to prospect research and cultivation, a new organizational structure and fundraising approach would be required to help the client meet its financial goals.

The Amplify Solution

Beginning with a deep analysis of the challenges involved in capturing the North American market, Amplify worked with the client to:

    • Bring in a marketing professional to help rebrand the message to be more attractive to their North American target populations
    • Identify foundations and potential donors using wealth screening and in-depth prospect research tools
    • Develop a new organizational structure for North America, more attractive to high-end donors and volunteers
    • Create and mount a successful COVID response campaign to meet the client’s urgent short-term needs

Impact

The COVID response appeal attracted many first-time supporters, who are being properly cultivated to be both larger and more consistent donors, while helping to identify other potential sources of support. Amplify’s team of experienced organizational and development professionals, harnessing their ability to identify and recruit outside resources, have put the client on track for their most successful fundraising year ever, while at the same developing both internal staff and North American volunteers.

reimagining a family foundation

The Challenge

This philanthropic, multi-generational family wanted to ensure that it would continue to have meaningful and growing impact on society for the long term. They reached out to Amplify for professional guidance and facilitation in setting the stage for effective, expanded grantmaking for the next generation of family leadership.

The Amplify Solution

Amplify deployed a team with deep experience in family foundation development, management, and grantmaking to:

    • Work with the family to formalize shared funding values, principles and priorities
    • Identify promising new funding areas – both Jewish and non-sectarian, domestic and international
    • Develop and test a new grant performance assessment system
    • Expand the leadership structure to include next-generation members
    • Advise and coach family leaders and foundation administrators

Impact

Working with the foundation as its strategic consultant and adviser, Amplify engaged with family members and with high-value new and legacy grantees to establish strategic funding goals and initiatives that will leverage the foundation’s reach into the future, while preparing the next generation of foundation leadership.

Fundraising for national impact

The Challenge

A new national, multisectoral coalition of immigrant rights and anti-poverty organizations had coalesced in the face of mounting threats from the then-US administration. Seeking significant foundation grants to rapidly step up its work, the coalition approached Amplify Partners to help plan and activate a national institutional fundraising campaign.

The Amplify Solution

Amplify built a team with deep experience in foundation and institutional fundraising to:

    • Conduct research, develop foundation profiles, and prioritize prospect lists
    • Revise and optimize campaign cases for support amid rapidly changing conditions
    • Craft tailored strategies for each foundation and institution
    • Train coalition executives for specific solicitations with materials and briefings
    • Prepare all written grant proposals and manage follow-up
    • Produce grant reports on project activities, based on foundation requirements

Impact

Amplify helped secure nearly $5 million in new grants during year one, enabling the coalition to educate and empower low-income immigrant families and advocate on their behalf against harsh national policies, policies which have since been rescinded. The work continued into year two to further expand the coalition’s capacity to assist immigrant families.

Strategic planning and capacity building

The Challenge

A major private foundation was considering a multimillion-dollar gift to a struggling private school. Concerned about the school’s long-term viability, the foundation sought expertise to develop a strategic plan that would ensure the school’s success and sustainability for the long term.

The Amplify Solution

A specialized team assembled and led by an Amplify Senior Partner engaged with the school’s professional and lay leadership in a robust strategic planning process to:

    • Assess internal capacity and conduct a competitive market analysis
    • Create a new values, vision and mission roadmap
    • Recommend steps to strengthen curricular and extra-curricular offerings, professional development, facilities and technology, marketing and outreach, and governance and finance
    • Develop a 5-year budget with enrollment and tuition milestones

Impact

Upon completion of the study and plan development, Amplify secured resources for start-up implementation of the strategic plan. With this funding, the school was able to upgrade its computer lab and other facilities, and replace its antiquated website with a state-of-the-art communications platform for teachers, students and parents.

two congregations ― one community

The Challenge

Looking to their future success while understanding the realities of population shifts and affiliation trends led two suburban Jewish congregations – one Reform and one Conservative – to explore an ambitious collaboration. They approached Amplify to guide them through this complex process and to create a plan and implementation roadmap.

The Amplify Solution

Amplify deployed a team with deep experience in strategy, planning, mergers, and Jewish institutional leadership to evaluate the challenges and opportunities of collaboration and to then create a plan for:

    • A new shared location and physical facilities housing both the two individual congregations and their joint activities
    • An integrated, multi-track educational program including pre-school, Hebrew/religious school and youth programming
    • Shared administrative services and staffing
    • Expanded community educational and cultural programming

Impact

Working with both congregations individually and collectively over a period of months, Amplify created an actionable work plan, setting strategy for securing board and membership buy-in and approval for critical areas of organizational structure and governance, rituals, education, membership, facilities, budget and fundraising. Leadership and members are excited about the future of their new shared entity as a source of inspiration and a place for worship, spiritual renewal and community.
